Peter: (about The Coral’s Dreaming of You) I wrote that song, actually. Sold it to ‘em.
Interviewer: Yeah, I’ve heard a bit about that. How did that happpen?
Carl: Well, it’s quite simple, really. Pete makes something up and he says it’s his.

“The tape recorder stops rolling, leaving me to fiddle around with it and try to get it working again. Desperately looking for a conversation topic to fill the awkward silence, lying in amongst the plates of food, bottles of beer and soft drinks on the table beside us, I notice a copy of John Harris’ definitive account of the Britpop era, The Last Party.
“Who’s reading that?” I enquire.
“That would be me,” says Hammond. “It’s probably the third time I’ve read it.”
“Why have you read it three times?” asks Barat, incredulous.
“I don’t know,” resumes Hammond, sheepishly. “It’s just a period I really like. It was when I first started getting heavily into music.”

Carl was rushed to the hospital a while ago because of pancreatitis. Does this affect the band in any way?
Didz: Hopefully long term.
Gary: Yes, long term for the better. Carl has a very large pallet for words, but one of the words that Carl never really utilized was ‘moderation’.
Didz: Or ‘stop’. He’s much better for it, though. He’s definitely paying for it.
Gary: He’s a lot more healthier right more now, he’s a lot more focused.
Didz: Less grumpy.
Gary: Less grumpy as well, so generally, his illness has had a knock-on effect, or should I say his recovery has had a knock-on effect with everything and everybody around us. It’s a much more productive environment. Because he’s not getting smashed all the time.
Didz: Carl minus drinks equals Carl minus hangover, which equals ten.

“Didz: …it’ll be a real smorgasbord of entertainment.
Carl: Everyone loves a smorgasbord.
Didz: Everyone does. I’ve never met anyone that doesn’t like a good smorgasbord… even a bad one, they wouldn’t pass.”

“Pete is incredibly frustrating, yet you can’t help but like him. The trouble is, he knows it.”

“I knew she wasn’t English
Cause she spoke it far too well
The grammar was goodly and the verbs as they should be
And the slang was bang on the bell
So as the language barrier clanged and banged
I couldn’t hear, hear or see
England, London, and Bow
Crumbled into the sea.”

“Yes, it was riveting. Despite everything, you knew there was goodness there. Something to believe in. Something which is good, pure and untainted by anything.”
— Peter, on meeting Carl (The Guardian, January 2003)

“There are three things that I know a bit about in my life and that’s QPR, my guitar and drugs. I know QPR are the best football team in the world, my guitar is the most beautiful thing I own and that I don’t take enough drugs to kill me.”
